Samples, Product Reviews and Quaker Oatmeal Squares

I’ve been getting a lot of samples in the mail lately…some of them hiking related, a lot of them not. But, I always like to read product reviews online before dishing out the cash to buy a new product that may or may not be worth the money…so I’ll be reviewing quite a few new products in the coming weeks…hopefully you’ll appreciate my honest candor. :)

Just a quick note…some of the samples I asked for, others I was just sent and a few I was sent specifically to write a review about. Besides the product I receive no compensation and my opinions are no way influenced by the companies that send me the samples…it’s all my 100% unedited opinions. (P.S. If you want to send me products (or books…I like books) to review, just send me a message and we’ll coordinate). So…without further ado…my first product review.

Quaker Oatmeal Squares Cereal. (I had the brown sugar flavor)

A dense cereal that stands up to milk, but is yummy enough on its own. (Photo from QuakerOats.com)

I loved this cereal, personally. I had it both ways, with milk and without and found that it was tasty either way. This is a very dense cereal and I was scared it’d be over fibery like a lot of similar cereals (shredded wheat, I’m looking at you), but it wasn’t! I definitely had the “touch of sweetness” touted on the box and for that I was thankful. It was just a touch and not overly sweat (frosted shredded wheat…looking at you). Was a great on the go breakfast when I wasn’t able to take time to sit down with a bowl of milk. Throw some in a container and hit the road, easy to eat while driving (not that I’m saying you should eat and drive, but let’s face it…most mornings we’re all doing it).

The next morning I had it with milk and found that it stood up well without getting overly soggy. In fact, the middle never really got soggy (maybe I just ate it too fast cause it was so yummy??).

Anywhoo…I highly recommend this product!! It is kinda expensive at about $4.69 a box (that was at my local Kroger), but no worse than most other brand name cereal.

For the nutrition interested people: One serving of Quaker Oatmeal Squares Brown Sugar (1 cup) provides 210 calories, 2.5 grams of total fat, which includes 0.5 grams of saturated fat and 1 gram each of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat, and there is NO cholesterol (yay!). There are 250 mg of sodium (11% of the daily recommendations), 6 grams of protein and 44 grams of carbohydrates, including 5 grams of dietary fiber (19% of the daily recommendations) and 10 grams sugars. Plus, unlike most similar cereals, no high fructose corn syrup! So overall, not bad! Thank you Quaker for finally listening to your consumers!

Would you like some Anchovies with that Milk?

I am that person that you find in the grocery store aisle that’s flipping over all the cans and boxes to read the ingredient list and nutritional facts. yep…that’s me…As a vegetarian it’s almost a requirement. There are quite a few things that you’d be surprised to find meat in (like cheddar and broccoli soup or stove tops cornbread stuffing) but there’s also other things you’d be surprised to find out are vegetarian (like a lot of varieties of Hamburger Helper)…so I’ve always found it best to read labels…well…at least on the processed stuff.

I have, however, never really read the labels on my milk except to make sure they’re organic. I always try to buy organic whenever possible, but with milk I make no exceptions…it’s always organic without all those added hormones that give girls boobs at 9. Organic milk can definitely get expensive. I’ve always used Horizons milk and have never had a problem…but it adds up pretty quickly. So I was more than ecstatic when I discovered Kroger has their own brand of organic milk, Simple Truth…a good $1.50 less than the Horizons milk. Sadly, my joy was short lived when I happened to glance at the back of the carton and noticed it said “Contains Tilapia Fish”…a little further reading shows it had Anchovy oil in it. GROSS! Even if I weren’t a vegetarian, I’m pretty sure I’d still find that gross. I was hoping the only reason it was in there is because I got the Omega 3 added milk.

That's right...contains Tilapia fish! Gross!!

So, that afternoon as I head to Kroger I of course checked the labels of all the milks….and ALL the Simple Truth milks have fish in them. Not sure how much Simple Truth there is to that…since when does milk have fish in it?

Sadly…I’ll be going back to the more expensive Horizon’s milk…but let this be a lesson, no matter how simple you think your food is…read the label!
